Bulimia

Do you fear about gaining weight, and will do anything to stop it? Maybe you have bulimia.

Do you know what, Princess Diana, Britney Spears, Kesha, Demi Lovato, Elton John, Lindsay Lohan and Lady GaGa, had in common? Is that all of them suffered and battled against Bulimia, but at one point all of them understood, that there way of living at that moment, was not the ideal for anyone, and they sought for help.  

Bulimia is an eating disorder, that can even become a life-threatening event. Bulimia, is when a person eats a large amount of food in short time. Then, they vomit what they had consumed, because they don’t want to gain any weight.

Bulimia principle starts in any person teenage years, due to many reasons, but principally, it is because of,  

  • Low self-esteem,
  • Negative body image,
  • Traumas,
  • Life changes,
  • The stress from activities were people focus on appearances.

Most people that have bulimia, also suffer from mental health disorder, like suicidal thoughts, anxiety and depression.

The symptoms of bulimia include,

  1. The fear of gaining weight,
  2. Restricted eating,
  3. Thinning on bones,
  4. Muscle wasting,
  5. Infertility (not being able to reproduce),
  6. Dry and yellowish skin.

Some healthy ways to lose weight:

  1. To start doing physical activity, not a huge amount but from 1- 2.5 hours.
  2. Avoid food with too much fat
  3. Put a limit to the amount of sugar you consume
  4. Don’t skip meals, because instead of helping you lose weight, you will have more.

For people with bulimia, the best treatments they can get is to: Attend to individual, group or family psychotherapy: people with bulimia are recommended to seek for medical care and monitoring, nutritional counseling, and medications with a prescription from a specialist.

The short term effects of bulimia are that people can suffer from

  1. Amenorrhea (which is the absence of menstruation),
  2. Anemia,
  3. Dehydration,
  4. Arrhythmia,
  5. Organ failure,
  6. hair loss,
  7. Strokes.

The long term consequences of bulimia include,

  1. The risk of getting diabetes,
  2. Brittle bones (weak bones),
  3. Difficulties for reproduction.

There are certain recommendations people can take in order to deal with bulimia. People can go talk with counselors and with people that are specialized in this topic. Don’t be afraid of asking for help; people are there for you to help you with anything you need. It is SOOO important that you never try to change your body, or have a low and negative self-esteem of your body. There are many ways in which people can grow their self-esteem so examples include,

  • Surround yourself with people that will make you grow instead of making you less,
  • Don’t compare yourself to others, since that ways the only thing anyone will see are your flaws, but never your greatest and bestest areas.

Something that you always need to remember is that when you need help on anything, don’t doubt about asking others. There are many options in which a person can get help,

  • Most people go to their friends, since they are also teenagers, and they are the people who can understand you better than anyone.
  • Your family, they won’t judge, they just want to get to understand and help you,
  • People can even have a superior that can help you, wither a teacher, a counselor, a neighbor, etc.

Most of the people you ask for help, are trying to help you grow and they are trying to understand what you are currently facing. They just want to be there with you, and you need to remember that whenever you are starting to think about having doubts about anything in your body, talk to someone, they will be willing to help you. Just remember you are not alone.
